Caveats and Usage

Be aware that the locations of the wells in this database are not verified by State staff and may be inaccurate. Drillers have 60 days from the plugging completion date to submit the plugging report online or via certified mail to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation so plugging report information may not show up in the database until several months after well was plugged.

Collection Method Description

Plugged well location information is collected by drillers using GPS during the plugging of the well. Information is entered either by the driller or drilling company staff, or staff at the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation and Texas Water Development Board.

Quality Control Level

Quality Assurance Description

The application has built in rules to help prevent data entry errors. A map verification ensures that the coordinate information entered matches with the County that was entered and allows the person entering information to see where the well is plotting on a map in order to verify that it matches the actual well location. Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation staff perform spot checks on the wells. Groundwater Conservation District staff review the plugging reports for wells that are drilled within their districts. Texas Water Development Board staff perform weekly and monthly quality assurance checks on the data.

The Submitted Drillers Report (SDR) Database (http://www.twdb.texas.gov/groundwater/data/drillersdb.asp) is populated from the online Texas Well Report Submission and Retrieval System (TWRSRS) which is a cooperative Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) and Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) application that registered water-well drillers use to submit their required reports. This system was started 2/5/2001 and began collecting all reports in 2003. Reports that drillers submitted by mail before the inception date are not included in this database, but are available for access at the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) Water Well Report Viewer: (http://www.tceq.texas.gov/gis/waterwellview.html). Be aware that the locations of the wells in this database are not verified by State staff and may be inaccurate. Added Proposed Use: Fracking Supply in February 2011.
